The darling of the 2022 Olympics is at the centre of a brewing drug controversy.

Kamila Valieva, the 15-year-old Russian skating sensation, failed a drug test taken earlier the team competition, co-ordinate to reports from the website Within the Games and a Russian newspaper.

The news came later on Valieva led the Russian team to gold on Monday, when she twice landed a historic quad jump. The teen figure skater became the starting time woman to land a quad leap at the Olympics.

Considering of her age, Valieva is considered by the Globe Anti-Doping Agency to be a "Protected Person."

Two Russian newspapers identified the drug as trimetazidine, which is typically used to treat breast pain, according to Reuters. Trimetazidine, or TMZ, works by increasing blood menses to the center and limiting rapid swings in claret pressure level. The drug is not approved for use in the The states. Information technology has been on the World Anti-Doping Agency's (WADA) list of prohibited substances since 2014.

TMZ was likewise at the center of a 2022 case that saw Russian bobsledders accept an eight-month ban in a settlement.

Former Russian pairs skater Tatiana Volosozhar, who won two gold medals at the 2022 Sochi Olympics, offered words of support for Valieva on social media, calling for the use of the Russian hashtag #Iwillneverbelieve to send the teenager back up.

Her post was "liked" on Instagram by Valieva herself.

Valieva led the Russians to gold in Mon's team result, in which the United states of america took silver and Nihon won bronze. Canada was 4th.

Valieva has garnered international attention for her skating skills and popularity online. She has over 350,000 followers on her Instagram page and has already appeared in the Russian edition of Vogue.

She was too young to compete at final year's Globe Championships in Stockholm, but at the European Championships in Tallinn final month, Valieva became the first woman to score more than xc points in the short plan, setting a world record of 90.45 on her way to the title.

Valieva was favored to win gold in the individual events, beginning side by side week in Beijing. Now, her Olympic future is uncertain.
